Right now while American college students are enjoying their summer break, in Iran college students are taking to the streets to protest the recent Presidential election. The BBC reports “Nothing has been seen on the streets of Tehran like this since the revolution”. About 60 percent of Iran’s 70-million population is under 30 years old.

Iranians feel their election has been stolen from them by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after the Iranian government proclaimed him the victor with over 63% of the vote. With a projected voter turnout of 85% many in Iran and around the world think the election was fraudulent. Visit the Wikipedia page for details.

Samira Mohammadi, 25 University student “It’s not a democracy. It’s dictatorship. They have obviously rigged the votes, nobody believes in the results they have announced. Debates held last week on TV proved that Ahmadinejad is a great liar, that’s even what people called him in huge rallies, ‘the liar president’. How can we trust the results when they come from the Interior Ministry of the government? They blocked SMS totally yesterday, they didn’t allow Mousavi’s representative to monitor polls and they counted the votes without any monitoring from non-governmental people.”

The most disturbing part for me is the lack of coverage by broadcast media in the United States. CNN calls themselves as the place to go for news. All evening their “news” has been pieces on the David Letterman – Sarah Palin rift, and like now a rerun of Larry King Live featuring those guys from American Chopper. They do report a little and show some video during “news breaks” as do most of the major television news networks

If you want to know what is going on you have to go to the Internet. Google News has over 10,000 news articles. Coverage by the BBC World News has been good. There are lots of good YouTube videos (embedding is block so you must visit to view this one).

“Opposition supporters have staged protests in Tehran after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner of Iran’s presidential poll.”

The Latest News on CNN is “Six Flags filing for bankruptcy”.

BBC raw footage

Which do you think is more news worthy? What a disgrace. Young Iranians take to the streets crying for freedom and CNN thinks the big news story is Six Flags filing for bankruptcy.

Social networks are buzzing about it. Twitter is lighting up with some news and lots of anger at the American media. Five of the top ten trends on Twitter:

Tehran

Iranian

#cnnfail (CNN’s failure to cover)

#iranelection

#iranrevolution

The Iran page on Facebook has been another source of video, pictures and commentary.

The latest news is there are fires all over the place. With the police cracking down so hard on street protest, people have taken their cars to the streets as a show of protest. CNN is now leading their news with a “Developing Story” Ahmadinejad Re-Election Sparks Unrest. What an understatement.

There are good pictures on Flicker as well. Here is a good slideshow.

University of North Carolina at Charlotte: Cisco Trusted Partner for New Data Center SAN Deployment and Application Delivery .

Part of the University of North Carolina system, UNC Charlotte enrolls more than 22,300 students and employs 900 full-time faculty. The university expects to increase enrollment by 10,000 students and to add 150 faculty members by 2015.

“We had outgrown the previous data center’s electrical, cooling, floor space, and data storage capacity, To support more user services and more data, we need a service-oriented data center design that provides network, power, and storage to applications as needed. Cisco provides outstanding data center design and deployment services. Our Cisco data center consultant has become part of the team, conducting a couple of half-day sessions monthly. We regard him as a trusted advisor for all aspects of data center design, not just the Cisco solutions.”

To prepare for growth, the UNC Charlotte information technology group is building a more scalable, resilient data center. The university will use its existing 25 year-old data center as a disaster recovery site and for asynchronous replication of data storage frames, high-availability elements of the Microsoft Exchange and the enterprise resource planning (ERP) application cluster, and services development and testing.

The university has selected the Cisco MDS 9513 Multilayer Director to deploy highly secure and scalable SANs at both locations, as well as the Cisco Application Control Engine (ACE) Modules in the Cisco Catalyst ® 6500 Series to enable application delivery and Web portal management for students and faculty.

Migration of the production applications to the new facility will take advantage of the service-oriented design of the new data center. Service orientation allows the network and the applications that it supports to work together. The primary goals are to increase the performance, availability, scalability, and manageability of enterprise applications in the data center, while simultaneously providing a highly secure environment.

In addition, these designs reduce the complexity and implementation time of enterprise applications in the data center, using virtualization technologies and network design best practices. The solution is targeted to provide the advantages of high availability, combined with an enhanced level of recoverability within the campus in a sustainable and cost-effective manner.

Hundreds are expected to rally for football at UNC Charlotte on Tuesday, two days before Chancellor Phil Dubois is due to submit his much-anticipated recommendation to the university’s trustees on whether to start a football program.

Dubois has said nothing publicly about which way he plans to go.

But there will be no confusion about the direction the rally wants him to go.

Calling the rally “March to the End zone,” about 1,000 students, graduates and school supporters are expected to march from Belk Tower at 6:30 p.m. to the Belk Track and Field Complex on the edge of campus.

There, Dubois is scheduled to meet with them and receive a makeshift goalpost as a clear sign of the rally’s support. The public is invited.

“The chancellor said he will address the rally but won’t say what he’s recommending to the trustees on Thursday,” UNC Charlotte spokeswoman Buffie Stephens said.

To pay for a team, a UNC Charlotte football feasibility committee recommended increasing student fees by $300 over the next four years. That would require an exemption to a 2006 cap that limits tuition and student fee increases to 6.5 percent a year.

Even if Dubois gives a thumbs-up for a football team, which would begin play in 2012, the trustees aren’t expected to vote on the matter until their November meeting, Stephens said.

Approval from Dubois and trustees would require Dubois to submit a proposal to UNC system President Erskine Bowles.
